Halloween Costume Party

Halloween Costume Party

Just a few of the over 150 people who attended Recenter’s Halloween Costume Party. We feasted on fried fish, dirty rice, fruit, cookies, and tons of candy. The Lady in Blue (dress) won first place in the costume contest and a dancing Unicorn won second.
We wound up the evening with card games and dominoes. Everyone had a good time.

Substance Abuse Affects the Whole Family

Substance Abuse Affects the Whole Family

When we think of substance abuse we think of the impact it has on the individual using drugs or alcohol. But substance abuse affects the family also. Spouses, children, and parents may all be affected by addiction in the family.

The addict or alcoholic is directly impacted by this disorder and may display mood swings, work performance degradation and possible loss of employment, money problems, legal offenses, and severe health problems. All of these will carry over to the family and their well-being. The substance user will realize they are causing the damage and may increase their use.

Recenter recognizes Substance Use Disorder as a major public health concern in Houstonians’ daily lives. Recenter has been working to help Houstonians put the symptoms of their disease into remission for nearly 75 years.

We will soon be implementing a nationally acclaimed course of study for families. Youngsters will not take part in the program but will instead be cared for and entertained with games and age-appropriate activities by an elementary teacher and Licensed Professional Counselor. A luncheon will be available for all family members.

Licensed Mental Health Professionals will implement the program we are calling The Family Afterward. It will be offered to families of Recenter residents who have made significant progress in their journey toward sobriety.

Our goal is to reunify the family and minimize the negative impact on the children. At the same time encourage the whole family to accept the substance abuser as a treasured family member. Two family members will attend the counseling. The substance abuser will not attend.

A Beautiful Day for a Bike Ride

A Beautiful Day for a Bike Ride

Photos From Recenter’s Motorcycle Ride

Everyone loves special occasions. At Recenter our residents work hard to regain sobriety and become the kind of person they know they can be. So they, like everyone, enjoy taking time out to have some fun. We also like to remember that we can have fun and remain sober.

We have a number of people who enjoy riding motorcycles. Mancuso Harley-Davidson helps sponsor fun motorcycle rides on a weekend. We learned about this and asked them to participate with us. They were more than happy to sponsor our ride on May 21st. With their assistance, we put together an event that would be fun and would also generate some income for Recenter.

To make this a true family event we invited two food trucks, rented a bouncy house and a dunk tank, and invited several vendors to display their crafts.

It was a perfect day for a motorcycle ride. There were 30 other riders and 15 passengers. It was warm but a cloud here and there made it a bit overcast and the wind made for a very comfortable ride.

HPD escorted the group
Police Escort

With so many riders, we enlisted the services of the Houston Police Department to keep us safe.  With a police escort, we were able to relax, enjoy the ride, and not be concerned about a driver cutting into the group.

Dunk Tank Adventure for our CEO
Waiting for a Swim

Our CEO, Steve Brinkman was awaiting our return.  He had previously agreed to take the first turn in the dunk tank.  He did think the price of 3 throws for a $1 was way too cheap.

This Could be the Pitch

Steve carefully watches every throw. The water in front of the tank came when a throw was on its mark and he splashed into the water.

Short Guys Get to Stand Closer

Our pitchers came in all sizes. We had to give this little guy some advantage but he kept getting closer and closer until he finally reached out and hit the target with the ball.

New Dunkee

We changed the occupant of the dunking chair.  Paul Nichol is now awaiting a throw.

BBQ Food Truck

Barbecue is always a favorite at a summer gathering. There was a line at this truck all afternoon.

Truck Sign is Cajun to Geaux

I don’t know if our friends from Louisiana drove in for the ride or this truck is local. The food was very good.

Unofficial judges are going to try BBQ and Cajun.

These guys look hungry and promise to give an unbiased opinion on samples from each of our food trucks.

Recenter Vendors Display
Vendor Tables

Our vendors sold homemade candles, soap, and embroidered goods; everything for the home.

The Kids Are Eager to Bounce

The kids are lining up and donning safety equipment for their turn in the  Bouncy House.

Everyone had a good time at this Recenter event on May 21st.

Chili Cook Off

Chili Cook Off

On the lighter side, we had a fun, family-friendly activity on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022. We had a chili cookoff sponsored by Recenter along with several other agencies focused on creating a safer environment for people in recovery. It was from 12-4 pm at the Fair Haven United Methodist Church, 1330 Gessner Rd. Houston, TX 77055. Recenter was there and enjoyed some excellent chili to warm us up.
